Lennie likes to be close to George, "crawled slowly and cautiously This suggests that Lennie feels safe with George and he sees comfort being close to him.
As George "pretended" to not notice Lennie this implies his frustration with him as he cannot look after himself and relies on George to comfort and protect him. George gets easily frustrated and annoyed with Lennie as he is not an independent character and expects George to be there to look after him all the time.
As a reader, we distinguish that George would rather live without Lennie by saying "when I think of the swell time I could have without you".
We learn that without Lennie, George could be independent and do anything that he would like to, but Lennie restricts him from doing this. George reassures him by reiterating the fact that he wants them to stay together by saying "course I want you to stay with me".
